Carpet water damage in Catlin, IL and an honest answer on what can be saved

Wet carpet can sometimes be dried and kept. Sometimes it cannot. We explain which applies to yours, extract the water and dry the floor beneath it.

What decides whether carpet can be saved

Three factors matter most: the source of the water, how long the carpet has been wet, and the construction of the carpet itself. Clean water from a supply line that is caught quickly gives the best chance of saving carpet. Water from a washing machine or dishwasher carries some contamination and needs more careful cleaning. Sewage, outside flood water and any water that has sat for days is treated as contaminated, and the IICRC S500 standard calls for removing and discarding carpet and pad affected by that kind of water.

Carpet that stayed wet for too long can delaminate, meaning the primary and secondary backings separate. Delaminated carpet ripples and cannot be reliably restored. Staining from dyes in wet furniture and from subfloor materials can also make carpet unsalvageable, and we point that out during the Catlin, IL assessment.

Why the pad is usually replaced

Carpet pad acts like a sponge. It holds water long after the carpet surface feels dry, and it is difficult to dry thoroughly in place. Because new pad costs relatively little compared with the labor of drying it, replacing the pad is the common choice even when the carpet itself is kept. Removing the wet pad also lets air reach the subfloor, which dries faster once it is exposed.

Tack strips along the walls are checked too. Wood tack strip soaked in contaminated water is replaced, and so is any strip that has rusted or come loose.

Extraction and drying

Our technicians use weighted extraction tools that press into the carpet and pull water from the carpet and pad beneath it far more effectively than surface vacuuming. Where the pad is being replaced, the carpet is detached at one side and folded back so the pad can be removed. The carpet can then be dried by floating, which means directing air movers underneath it so it lifts slightly and dries from both sides. Dehumidifiers remove the moisture that evaporates.

Subfloor readings are taken before the carpet is reinstalled. Plywood and concrete need to be dry, or moisture will stay trapped under the new pad.

Cleaning and reinstallation

Once dry, salvaged carpet is cleaned and deodorized, then stretched back into place over new pad. Stretching matters, because carpet that got wet can relax and develop wrinkles. If the carpet must be replaced, we document it for your insurer and coordinate installation. Stairs, area rugs and upholstered furniture are assessed separately. When water reached walls as well, our Water Mitigation page describes the broader drying approach, and lingering smells are handled through Odor Removal.

Our water heater leaked into the family room carpet. They replaced the pad, floated the carpet to dry and restretched it. You would never know it had been wet.

They told us straight away that the basement carpet could not be saved after the backup, and why. The explanation helped when we filed our claim.
